EL PASO, Texas -- University Medical Center in Tucson medical officials said in a press conference Sunday that Rep. Gabrielle Giffords is able to communicate, although not verbally.

Giffords, who was shot in the head at a public event in Tucson, Ariz., on Saturday, communicated through body functions like squeezing fingers, doctors said.

Surgeons also said they are cautiously optimistic, and although she remains in critical condition, Giffords' brain circuits are operating.

The bullet entered the back, left side of Giffords' head and traveled through to the front, surgeons said. They also reported the surgery lasted about two hours.

Doctors said "she looks good right now" and "brain swelling is the biggest threat right now."

Doctors predict months of rehabilitation.
